Is Servo Tuning Necessary

Servo Tuning should be part of the integration when adding Camsoft CNC Professional controller on a new or retrofit machine. So, how do you Provision CNC Profesional for Servo Tuning PID Values using basic automatic tuning features and diagnsotic tools. The CNC Controller software provides a basic servo tuning features to help you get started. The servo tuning features are found in the Diagnostics window. The button labeled Amp Tuning Test will begin the function. The feature provides two methods, “advanced and basic”. Both methods do account for both scales and encoders.

These tests will vary in time from 3 seconds to start or longer. This is normal and up to 5 to 20 minutes to tune an axis is normal. The time it takes depends on how hard the features has to try or how many times it tries to find good settings. The harder it tries the longer it takes — in rare cases 30 minutes or more. It is safe to say that as long as there are no error messages, then it is still working. It will eventually turn itself off or recommend that you try the manufacturer’s servo tuning program. You are not required to run our tuning program nor the manufacturer’s. It is a tool to be used when needed. Additionally, there are slider bars and axis number buttons that allow the user to adjust their own PID settings. Manufacturers may offer PID estimated values per motor size which can be set with the slider bars. There are also Proportional, Derivative, and Integral gain settings in the CNCSETUP.EXE program for fine-tuning.
